wainscoting electrical outlets

Wainscoting Electrical Outlets

If this application is for new construction, your architect or designer will account for this during the initial design phase. In remodeling projects, electrical outlets may have to be moved laterally, depending upon their current location. One option is to move outlets into the baseboard or higher up on the wall so as not to interfere with the continuity and balance of the wainscoting. For the best appearance, we recommend having a licensed electrician involved in the process, and having our team help with the process of wainscoting electrical outlets.

Ways to Cut Electrical Outlets

There are a few different ways that you can cut wainscoting around an outlet, depending on the specific look that you’re going for.

Cutting with a Jigsaw

If you want a clean and flush look, you can use a jigsaw to make precise cuts around the outlet. Simply trace the outline of the outlet onto the wainscoting panel, and then use the jigsaw to cut along the line.

Cutting with a Router

Another option is to use a router to create a rabbeted edge around the outlet. This will give the wainscoting a more finished look, and will also help to hide any imperfections or gaps between the wall and the wainscoting panel.

Cutting with a Scoring Knife

Finally, if you’re not concerned about creating a flush and seamless look, you can simply cut the wainscoting panel to fit around the outlet box. Use a sharp knife or utility knife to score the panel, and then snap it along the scored line. This method is quick and easy, but will leave a small gap around the outlet.

Before cutting into the drywall you want to make sure there are no exposed wires that could be dangerous. Always shut off the power to the outlet at your breaker box before starting any work around electrical outlets.
